End of May veggie update

Lots and lots to show you today! First, here's some of my bigger squash. The plants are loaded with them, all different sizes from one inch long to almost ready to pick. The two I DID pick are at the bottom of this post:


And a snowpea (with the squash wading pool in the background) these are so good I'm not even getting many pictures of them, not cooking them or steaming them, just eating them raw and crunchy:


My cherry tomato bush is loaded with little tomatoes. I've picked two of the ripest ones already, you'll see them at the bottom of the post.


So is my grape tomato bush, and they've got differing shades of green and orange going on, too. I like it when they start producing one to three tomatoes per day, that's exactly what I need for my salad.


After I picked the one LONG pepper from each pepper plant, now both of them are producing 'normal' sized peppers:


Here's what's ripened and been picked today. Two little squash, both about 5 inches long. Two cherry tomatoes, four grape tomatoes, and one Better Boy tomato. Plus two snowpeas that made the picture, but got eaten before I could get the jpg cropped and up here on the blog. :D

End of April veggie update

I'll start with the obligatory group shot:


My grape tomato plant has lots of clusters of blooms, but no little green tomatoes yet:


But my Early Girl plant has a tomato! This first one is about marble sized:


The peonies in the previous post are using the wire cage that I'll put between the snowpeas. They're getting tall enough to where they need it! Maybe I ought to go buy another one. I had to scoot the window boxes apart so the peas wouldn't grab onto each other. ;)


The squash in the wading pool is doing fine too, much healthier looking than last year.


And last, my Better Boy tomato. I'm wondering now if this one or the Early Girl will ripen first. The race is on!

Veggies and Tomatoes

Anyone ready for a status update on my tomatoes? Here's the Early Girl. I read a couple of reviews online after I bought this one, that said the tomatoes were early, but not as good as the tomatoes from plants that ripened a couple of weeks later. If I'd known that, I may have gotten something else, flavor is the most important reason I am growing my own.


Blooms on my Cherry tomato plant! Last year I got Husky Cherry Red, and enjoyed them very much, we'll see what difference there is between the two. I almost got a grape tomato plant too, I can buy a container of those at the store and eat almost the whole pint in one sitting. Maybe next year.


Here's the Better Boy, and I've heard only good reviews about this one. I'm actually thinking, if they all have blooms right now, don't you suppose all three of these plants will end up having tomatoes at the same time?


And I posted this one last, so you could easily see the difference between the previous week and this week - what a difference only a few days makes on my snow peas! A trellis that I bought for the peas is around the front of the house, holding up my peony bush. Those blooms get so huge that the flowers usually get too heavy for the stalks and arc down till they touch the ground. Now, watching these grow so fast, I'm hoping their blooming time will end before my snowpeas get tall enough to need the support!

Still Tomatoes!

Is it time for another tomato post? I've been eating them all summer - for a while there in late July and August I think it just got too hot for them, but now they're back, with a vengeance. Sorry about the flash on these pix, it's sure getting dark earlier now!

Here's the Better Boy plant, showing one almost ripe and one in the lower left still green:



The better boy are great tasting, but prone to splitting and spots. Here's the Goliath plant, a great tomato producer, but the end results just don't taste as good as the other two varieties. I have maybe ten tomatoes on it now:



The best producer of all,and one I'd definitely buy again, the Husky Cherry Red plant. It's a short bush, and usually loaded with small tomatoes:



This cherry tomato may be the one I take inside and try to nurture indoors after the first freeze, the flavor is excellent, and lookie, it's still producing blooms:

Tomatoes part 4, eight days later

Here's the status of my cherry tomatoes - they just need to ripen, I think... :) There's another 8 or so little green-pea to marble size ones on this plant, it's making bunches of tomatoes. There's 5 here, all tight together in this little spot:


I have lots of blooms, two little tomatoes, and this ping pong ball sized tomato on the Goliath tomato plant:



Finally, the one tomato on the Better Boy plant (it was the smallest plant of the three I bought, in a little peat pot, not the ½ gallon container like the other two) but there's lots of blooms here too:

Tomato Progress Part One

Here's my tomato plants, ten days later. From the left, Goliath, Cherry Red, and Boy. Sounds like Tarzan's family, doesn't it? :D


I just put the cages on them this morning, and told them they had a lot of growing to do to live up to the tall cages I'd bought.

And (drrrrum roll) here's a picture of the first two teeny tomatoes, about the size of an english pea. They're on my cherry tomato plant, the one in the middle. Blooms on all three plants, but this one will have the first fruit.
