Big Jewel Boxes

I'm thinking of starting something that'll keep me occupied for a long time... a scrappy jewel box for my king size bed. I don't have a quilt for MY bed yet, lots of twin size and a couple of queen or double sized ones.

So I know I like the jewel box pattern, and I also like the idea of pieced borders that extend into the quilt, so I got to playing on my EQ. The middle in solid white looked too plain, especially for the big expanse of a king size. Here's the top three I came up with:

First, a small 9-jewel diamond shape made by substituting some blue for the white fabrics in the very center.

Above, a large center 25 jewel diamond surrounded by a thin blue trim that almost goes out to the edges...

And last, the smaller 9 jewel diamond middle surrounded by the thin blue trim.

I plan on doing the little squares both strip pieced (from 2 inch strips) and some leader-enders. I have a LOT of 4 inch squares I'd like to use up for this, so all those half square triangle 4-square jewel blocks will finish at six inches.

The hard part will be keeping the blue and white areas counted out, for whichever final design I decide on. Which design do YOU like better?

Oh man, is this great! I have to vote for the center layout, because it's more defined than the 3rd option, and it fills in more space from the overall design; it will look super on a king bed. And this will certainly keep you off the street for awhile! I can't wait to see it.......

Ok, here's my two cents...I like the last one, the smaller 9 jewel diamond middle surrounded by the thin blue trim. I like the middle part the best of the three. Keep us posted as to which one you do...

I got my coffee cup from zazzle yesterday and had coffee in it this morning. My two pins are on their way. I love my cup. Thanks for making these designs. They are great. I must say I really enjoy your blog too.

Wow! It really does look like sparkling jewels. Personally, I like numbers 2 and 3 best. In visualizing it on your bed, I'm thinking that the diamond on #2 might get lost over the edges of the mattress. I'm thinking that the diamond on #3 might be in better proportion to the top of the mattress. Lovely design. Don't forget to take pictures of the progress. :-)

I absolutely LOVE them all but the middle one gets my vote as there's a good balance between the white and blue amounts - this will be one gorgeous quilt - I've always loved jewel box but haven't the stamina to piece a whole one - can't wait to see yours unfold :o)

Oh I love the jewel box pattern and one day I'll get round to making one myself.
Of you 3 designs, I'd pick the third one. I prefer the proportions of the diamond. Can't wait to see how this comes together :)

Middle - it looks the most balanced, IMHO. Love the border...

Wow... very striking designs! I like the middle or second one the best. The center medallion looks very much like a jewel encrusted piece/item to me.

Spectacular! I personally like the middle one the best. Although, that 3rd one looks good too.

The middle one gets my vote - it glitters the most!

I like the second one best -- but whichever one you do, this will be an outstanding, beautiful quilt!

The third one. The center section won't get lost over the edge of the bed. And if you drop it down a bit then it won't get lost under the pillows either.

I love the middle one! They are all great. If you'd shown only one, we'd all have loved that one. =) This has always been one of my favorite patterns, and yet I haven't made one. I'll enjoy watching yours come into being.

Here is another vote for the middle one. Of course, any one of them would be great, but I do like the center one best. Your use of EQ is great. Your designs are always eye catching. I can see you enjoy the design process.

I love Jewel Box quilts. I have 2 king size quilts but they were both made before we bought our new mattress which is much taller than the old. That was about 2 years ago and I've been putting off making a new larger quilt.
