Top done!

Here it is! I changed the fan in the upper right corner to the pinwheel block because I wanted more white there. When I decided to go on and use the flag print for the border, I took the 4 little windmills out of the corners. Then I made the little flower looking thing, out of my extra 16 half square triangles. I have no idea what block it is.

I know the flag print border is kind of busy... I had two reds that I was thinking of using, but the first was too rust toned, it didn't look right next to the red in the house and the log cabins. The second red was a blotchy hand dyed look, too bright, it stood out like a sore thumb and almost made you wince when you look at the quilt. There IS enough of the blue with little red stars (that was used for the background) to use for a binding. I kept thinking to myself, if I DON'T use this flag print now, what would I ever use it on again? So there it is.

Ann's convinced me I should let this quilt be the first thing I try free motion quilting on, now that I have a new machine that has a darning foot and will let me do it. But I have NO clue what sorts of quilting to try on it, as a first attempt at quilting on my machine. :)

Just went and read Judy's info on machine quilting, that helps. But what patterns?

Looks absolutely great - it's been such fun watching it come along - I don't think the outer fabric is too busy, just appropriate - don't know the name of that little block with the hst's but it's lovely, worth drafting out I'd say

Wow, that turned out GREAT! I'm in the same boat with free-motion quilting. Right now I do mostly large stipples and loop-de-loops! I am constantly looking at quilt mags for the machine quilting!!! Good luck. Can't wait to see it DONE DONE.

It looks great. I think the border is perfect. I have mainly done free motion stipple which actually turned out to be more of a meander. I have also done handwriting free motion which might work on this quilt. You could write words or quotes that pertain to the theme of liberty and justice. It would be subtle but it's fun to have something sort of hidden.

This quilt really turned out great. I like the border. It really adds punch to the quilt. I like the little flower you put in there. Great job!

Wow Jane, you really went to work on this...it's very, very nice! I like the changes you made. It's got action but isn't too busy!!

I think you are ok with the borders....maybe not what you really wanted, but not bad and it gets it used.
I rarely think of any of my quilts as the "period" in the sentence...more like each one is just another word or letter. I know more will come after it. Each one is not my whole thought...does that make sense?? Anyway, great job....way to go with new machine qilting!!!!

Hi, I've been keeping tracks of this as you went along and it looks great now it's all together.

well done- I would be tempted to do free motion stars myself...but by all means, look around for more ideas...and practice on some small say 12 by 12 mini sandwiches first-so you can play with different quilting ideas and threads! I always warm up on something like that first-good luck in deciding what to quilt on this top-and I also think the border is perfect-are you going to use up more for the backing???

I think you are right about the border. It's the perfect place to use it and it is a busy print but I think the quilt can take it fine. Isn't that what the 4th is all about anyway...fireworks!

I'll give you a tip someone gave me when I first started quilting myself. Take a few pieces of paper and a marker of pen and just start "quilting" on the paper, especially if you are going to do a meander type stitch. It lets your mind learn what the basic stitch is and your brain get used to where you are going and what you are doing. Just take the pen and go for it without stopping. Once you have done that a few times you will be able to let it flow on the machine without thinking "where am I going next?"

Wow. It's been so much fun watching the creative process of this quilt.

Thank you for sharing.

I love the idea of stars in the free-motioning - especially in the background.

The watermelon bite is pretty darn captivating! And the border looks just fine with the quilt - I wouldn't be fussing over it. :)

Slap two ugly FQs together and practice some free-motion that you wanna do on the quilt. I find this a great way to warm me up and feel braver about tackling an entire quilt! :)

ah Jane, it really is great- and doesn't your wonky house look right at home? I love the firecracker. Great job. Love the solution of the border- what I would have done, exactly!

I don't free motion much but definitely practice on something you don't care about first and get warmed up. Great hint about drawing them on paper first.

The quilt looks wonderful and quite appropriate for this time of year.

This one is so fun! I have to admit to having picked out as much machine quilting as I've put in (at least it feels that way!) The good thing about this piece is it doesn't need anything too fancy...the piecing is the main thing! Congrats.

I LOVE how that firecracker turned out - your fuse is perfect. Sorry, my machine quilting experience is extremely limited - I'm no help there at all. I know I'd like to see something contrasty in those areas of background near "and" - maybe stars? or your name...

VERY CUTE! I agree, this border works perfectly! It just ties the patriotic theme all together. And if you have enough for the back, that's what I'd use, too!
Good Luck with the fm quilting! I'm confident you'll do a FINE job.

Oh, it is really super wonderful! I know you made some changes along the way, but the end result is just perfect - flag border too!

Cheers!

Jane that border looks fantastic! Great pick.

Love the firecracker too. I think that's my favourite part - although the wonky house is a close second!

Well done - it looks great!!

I LOVE your liberty quilt! And the flag material looks great as a border. How about free motion stars with loops connecting them. You know, the kind of stars you used to draw in grade school?
