Another Web Page

Here's the second round to my guild's version of the Round Ostrich. Anyone want to help me proofread it or offer ideas?

Link to September Rounds B & C

If anyone has any good ideas for rounds D & E I'll take suggestions too!

I've also been working on making some blocks from that plaid material I got back when my local Hancock's was going out of business. I'm using a pattern from Bonnie's site, called Hidden Spools, but I'm not as happy with it as I thought I would be.

This is my first 4 blocks, not sewn together yet, which is why the plaid in the middle looks funny. :) Bonnie warned that there would be all bias edges - but on this loosely woven plaid fabric, there's a LOT of stretch.

I can't decide if I need to go on and put some straight-of-grain sashing in now, or sew these 4 together THEN put a border around it. It'll be a wheelchair quilt for my guild's charity challenge, so there's no exact size requirement I'm going for.

The red was supposed to cheer it up some, when I put the blue and plaids together, it looked too dreary... there IS another plaid with a lot more red that I plan to use for this one too. If I put sashing between these 4 blocks, I could use that to help blend in that red. But if I sash the blocks, I'll lose that red spool in the center. Any hints, anyone?

the page looks great!! as far as the blocks, how abouit groups of four sashed? that way you get the spool, and tie it together with the other plaid?

just a suggestion.

I like the spools! If you don't like makeing the blocks because of the stretch, etc. - I have an idea! Seperate the blocks into spools and then set them diagonally (so the spool is upright) - alternating with solid squares. Yup, solid squares speed things up a whole lot and you still get to enjoy the blocks that are pieced. Would go very fast if you are aiming for a wheelchair size - it is a great little quilt and sure to make someone happy! Wheelchair quilts are nice backed in flannel...

Cheers!

It's an interesting way to use the plaids up - it'll be great on the knees of some grateful fella!

No idea how to help though. But I do like the idea of flannel backing!

Since it's for a wheelchair quilt, and not a show, how about sewing carefully to reduce stretch, and just going with it? I did the other one, not this one, and it worked out okay in the end. I like it the way it is, with the bright red.

Older eyes begin to lose the ability to see those pastels, and bright colors are not quite as bright as you would imagine.

Oh, ideas for rounds - one thing appliqued, one thing that's off-center, one thing with a bird name in it (flying geese, dove in the window, etc.)?

maybe it is not appealing because all the fabric is so much the same?? No change or variety, just all plaid.

Even when I foundation piece I try to cut my pieces with straight of grain---but that's just me. String quilts, I deal with the bias and stay stitch the blocks on the outer edge

I like it as is, without sashing. I also like Evelyn's flannel idea.

Hi Jane, the plaids and red and blue go well together. The four blocks don't seem like quite enough...that's my only suggestion..LOL Not much help am I? *VBG*
