Well, here's one of the things I worked on at the retreat this past weekend, a small quilt based on the technique in the book 'Square Dance' by Martha Thompson:
Bright, isn't it? I started by sewing a 7x9 grid of 6 inch squares, with a 3 inch border in purple, then drew a template, traced around it on my grid-fabric, then cut the plain squares up according to her instructions. I was surprised how much it shrunk when I rotated the little squares and sewed them back together to make my pinwheels.
Now I have a pile of three inch squares (produced when you hack the plain blocks apart) that I plan to put on the outer border, but the inner rectangle is so much smaller than expected that I need to add some blocks to it to make it bed-sized. There's lots of the purple fabric left, and I also have the exact same tone on tone print but in royal blue, same color value, that would look good in there too.
Here's my dilemma - Should I make the whole quilt with a background of purple... or use some blue as background for the pinwheels to break up the purple a bit? Or should I make some of the other borders blue? I can bind it in blue OR purple. Which of the following two EQ6 design pictures do you prefer? The actual blue/purple fabric color difference is more subtle than the colors you see here:
More on the retreat when I get more pictures ready to post! I also taught a class and have some photos from that, and took a class and have some things from that to show you. :)

I like the one with the blue in it.
It's beautiful. I prefer the first one. Yup, definitely the first one.
I like the one with the blue and purple in it!
great quilt....
FWIW, I prefer the all purple version? (Have you asked a cat?)
I prefer the one with the blue. It seems to frame the center better. It's a gorgeous pattern.
This is going to be a great quilt. I vote for the blue, too -- to add even more interest.
This quilt is gorgeous! Love those colors...and whichever you choose, the blue or the purple, it will be a stunning quilt!
It's got to be the all purple one for me - but then I ADORE purple :o)
I like them both. The purple will look as if things are floating, and that's always pretty. The blue is like a breaker border, and will be great, too.
It is a very colorful (which I like) quilt. Even though I prefer the contrasting blue, the all purple would undoubtedly tone the whole quilt down a bit.
I like the first one too Jane, the extra bit of colour is fun. I love the optical illusion with the offset pinwheels in the middle. Makes me tilt my head to the right a little!

Hmmm...I think I like the all purple version, but without seeing the blue fabric it's hard to visualize -- either way it's going to be a really fun quilt!
I think that the all purple one brings out the center and shows it off more. But both ways will make fun quilts
I'm sure you made your decision long ago - but I'll comment anyway. I like the all purple version. The other version looks to me like you ran out of purple fabric so made do with the blue. It's a marvelous quilt - I love the bright fabrics in the center. I've not seen another picture more recently as I've been catching up on reading - have you put this one away for awhile?
i love BOTH of them, but yes, the blue does break up the purple...gorgeous
