Some Fall Finishes

First, here's my challenge block for my retreat this coming weekend. As we registered for the retreat, we got a square of challenge fabric, and had to make a 12½ block with it, using at least an inch of the fabric. I got this block pattern from Quilter's Cache.   It's all paper pieced, and it's called 'Wild Zinnias.'   The challenge fabric is the stripe on the outer corners and middle. We got an 8½ square, and I used just about all of it.

It was almost like an ugly fabric challenge for me, because I did not like the challenge fabric at ALL - reminded me of fried eggs... and on lime green, not my favorite color! :) I had a difficult time finding fabric to go with it, since it's out of my normal comfort zone.

I also finished the Patriotic quilt top this weekend:

I think I'll end up binding it in red, after it's quilted, but that'll be a long time away, gotta save some money up first.

And while I was out in the backyard, hanging quilts and blocks on the fence to get some natural light, I noticed that the leaves on my oak tree were just starting to change. Most of the leaves are still green, but some of the outer ones are starting to turn:

Your patriotic quilt has worked out beautifully - a red binding would be the icing on the cake :o) I love the paper pieced block, although like you I think I'd have had difficulty with that 'fried egg' fabric. This might be just the thing for a paper pieced block for my quilting teenagers to try out for their Monday night quilts

It is strange fabric indeed but you've done a good job of matching it and it's a cute block. I assume they will put them all together at the retreat to make a quilt?

Ha ha! I can see the fried egg aspect of the challenge fabric. :) But I love the block that you turned it into!

I love the way the Patriotic Quilt turned out. The Wild Zennias is amazing. I don't know what I would have figured out to do with that challenge fabric, but your solution is great!

That challenge fabric looks like it is certainly an acquired taste.
We are almost done with our leaf season, although it happened for different trees at different times, so there wasn't a big display overall.

Your patriotic quilt is absolutely gorgeous! It looks wonderful.

Great job on that challenge block and I love your patriotic quilt! Great work on both (even if you did malign one of my favorite colors -- come on, lime green is a neutral!)
