Beanbag Covers

Here's my workspace at the library. You'll note the shelves of books, chair, computer, printer, and sewing machine? vinyl scraps and squares?

Yup, I've taken my sewing machine to work! Our beanbag chairs in the Easy book section were all very worn and tattered. Some had holes that had been patched with clear book tape, and in the way of little kids, no matter how difficult it was to peel the tape off, pick, pick, pick they did, leaving the sticky residue on the beanbag chairs, which slowly attracted dust and dirt from the carpet and turned black. So I decided to recover them. I'm using simple 9 and 16 patch blocks made of squares cut from vinyl donated by Ann-sewsalot. Here's a finished one:

Much better than the original deflated looking red beanbag behind it, isn't it? I have sewn a velcro seam on the back that allows me to stuff the whole 'old' beanbag inside the new cover. I'll make three of them. They won't match, in fact, I'm pretty much out of bright colors and have started using the silver, gold, maroon, and black scraps to cut my squares. But on the positive side, that does give me a good chance to use those color words that don't get into a toddler/preschool crayon box!

Nicely done, incorporating work with sewing.

the cushion looks great -- and a variety will be no problem! With a velcro seam the kids will have something to pick at without causing damage :-)

They look awesome - absolutely perfect for a kids reading corner - what a wonderful excuse to stitch at work - now what could I persuade my Headteacher to let me do at my desk I wonder?

Fantastic - they look way better than the old ones. Hope the kids appreciate your efforts.

Great idea! Now, can you give a basic quilting class for the older kids-say 9 or 10 year olds, base it around one of the children/quilt books that are out now? That way you can get paid to quilt at work all day-hey, its related!!

Hooray for bean bags in the children's section! My Little Boy just delights in story time at the library, but sitting on a hard chair, even for just 5 minutes, is just too much for him. The children's librarian sees us coming and she runs to get him a bean bag - soft and comfy to bounce up and down on, but keeps him contained - he does love stories so much - just sitting still is a challenge! I love how you made over the bean bags at the library - they look great!

Cheers!

Evelyn

Hi Jane, I love what you are doing with the vinyl! What a great idea..but then, you are just full of good ideas!!

I'll have to keep that in mind, as I've never tried to sew vinyl..but where there is a will there is a way. And putting the whole bean bag inside is a great idea. Having lived with a bean bag chair back in the late 60's, early 70's, I know what kids jumping into them can do...LOL So many pellets! Hugs, Finn

Wow - you've been busy. I'm so far behind on reading blogs I'll never catch up. Enjoyed all the pictures of Christmas quilts and their recipients. Great idea on the library beanbags. Love the pictures of the cats with their new cat tree!

So clever and creative! I love the new bean bag cover. Let's see.... scheming, planning... hoping to come up with a way to bring my sewing projects to work. It'll be sort of hard to do sign language interpreting while sewing.
