Fishy Art Quilt

Well, I've decided I'm not really an 'art quilter' and I've told them I'm going to stop coming to the Art bee meetings. Instead, I think I'm going to join the Stashbuster's bee they're about to start... I hope they pick an evening for meetings that will work with my schedule.

Anyway, there's the last of our three art quilts we've been passing around:

Since I'm not coming back, this one's my own blue fabric, the dyed denim on the bottom, and two other people have had it the last two months, adding the fish, corals, bubbles, and seaweed. The detail is incredible, I especially love the rock in the lower right corner and the fish with the teeth!

I'm not sure where it should go from here. Other than adding some trapunto to the fish shapes (and that'd be a challenge to do with the denim, I think) the only other things I can think of to do would be add some sand colored fabric to the bottom - and tie on some more shells? Add more beads for eyes and such?

Have any of you ever made a 3D fabric frame, with that stiff interfacing they use for fabric bowls? I think the difficult part would be the corners. Any ideas?

I think it is a great art-y piece and to me - it looks finished! Good for you for trying something new. I find that this type of quilting takes a whole 'nother type of stash to work on and I am just not going there!!!

Cheers!

Honestly, I don't think it needs anything except the frame. I love seeing the art quilts but I've never had the urge to make one. Good for you for trying something new.

Your quilt looks just like an aquarium. Vivid colors.
Catching up on reading, Your purple pineapple blocks turned out great...

I am definitely not the arty type so have no suggestions but it sure is pretty to look at.

this turned out lovely! What an interesting group to participate in. I hope the next one "fits" better for you. I've used timtex/fast2fuse for fabric boxes and assume you'd do corners of a 3-D frame much like box corners.... they're not too hard -- basically sut the stiffener to the shape you want so it'll butt join; satin stitch to finish the edge; butt join the two sections using a needle and thread tack them together...

I am not an art-y quilter either, but really like your sea scene. I'd say it was done as is, unless you are really wanting to finish it off with a bit more personalizing (more shells, beads etc.) I am going to give postcards a try but I will have to recover from the wonky letters first!

It's nice there's more than one type of group that meets in your area.

Hate to say it, but this piece looks out of balance to me - too heavily weighted towards the lower left... I think it needs something towards the top and rightish. Swimmer's legs? More bubbles or a colorful fish? Somethin'. As far as the frame goes, I'm no help there - sorry.

I love how your ostrich around is coming along -- beautiful.
I think you are an art quilter! What great ideas making that fish quilt. But, I'm with you -- I belong in the stashbusters bee myself!

It so amazes me how people can do these things! I"m not artsy at all so there is no way I can help with suggestions, but I loved looking at it!

It's a neat piece Jane, can't take that away from it...but definitely in the art quilt category.
It's very attractive tho. I've never tried the 3D fabric frame, sorry, can't help you there...I'm sure someone will know. Hugs, Finn

How about some beads on that jellyfish? And in the stuff in the lower left corner? Some nice seed beads and sequin-y stuff. A little treasure chest caught in the seaweed?

Looks great, though. What fun.

I think the important part is that you stepped out of your 'box' and tried something new. Doesn't mean that you have to like it and totally change your path...just that you tried it. :o) Your piece looks fabulous!!
