Leaf Art

I've joined an Art Quilt group, here in Memphis, to try to expand my quilting horizons and stretch my limits a bit. I don't consider myself an art quilter by any means, but I figure it can't hurt to give some of the techniques a try, get out of my comfort level. We're almost all beginners at this, muddling along.

We each brought a piece of fabric to our last meeting - only stipulation was that it could NOT be 100% cotton quilting fabric. Then we traded pieces in a drawing, and also traded some embellishments.

The piece I drew looked like autumn to me - so I added some satin branches and corduroy leaves along the top edge. This picture (at least on my monitor) looks a lot more pinkish than it really is - the two red leaves are actually a deep burgundy. There's another 6 to 8 inches that drapes off the table on the bottom - plenty of room for someone else to add something more! Today I'll take this to our meeting and trade for another piece of fabric. I still don't feel like an art quilter - this is just machine applique. Maybe if I'd done something abstract and non-representational, it'd feel more arty? I guess I need to decide what my definition of an art quilter is. Any suggestions?

You get my vote as an art quilter. I love it!!!and I'm not a real art quilt kinda person. Looks like a sunset on an autumn day...The different fabric texturs are great.

I like it. I think it is Arty. Introducing the different fabrics makes it look more arty than a regular quilt. Also the fact that the pieces are all different rather than cut from a template. I'm curious to see what you will do next.

If it is something you are developing as you go along, it is more arty than a preset pattern, so I think you are on the way to having your first "art quilt". Love that fabric, really pretty!

Art quilter? Somebody who puts it together as she/he goes. Does there have to be a definition? Someone who creates is a better definition to me.

looks good

Looks like an art quilt to me. To me, art quilts are almost anything that doesn't look like a traditional quilt.

For what it's worth my understanding of an art quilt is one intended to convey a feeling/emotion/ interpretation of the world as its primary purpose, while a "traditional" quit's primary purpose is to be funcational (a wall hanging, a table runner, a bed covering)... Both quilts do both purposes, but its what thier primary goal is that differs ...

Soooo you've made an art quilt -- representing/interpreting autumn :-)

It is wonderful... and now I'm really ready for Autumn to come! Besides, ALL quilts are forms of art, so you were an artist even before joining this group!

You are an art quilter if you call yourself one. Let us know when the dubbing ceremony is. :)
Your venture is great. I too am there between traditional quilters and art quilters, and have decided that I'm not going to worry about titles. I'll just pick and choose whatever technique I want to, without regard to which world it fits into.

Your project turned out really neat. Love the coloring. Was it a challenge to work with non-cotton fabrics? I think it would look cute in calicos too!

Oooh, I think that is really cool! I have "played" a bit with art quilts too--it's not as easy as it looks LOL!

It's very cool looking!! I think the true colors will look just like autumn. Funny how computers hcange them sometimes!! Can't wait to see what you get next!!

I like it -- I'd consider it artsy or very creative -- not something you ordinarily make as a quilt!

I think it looks wonderfull...whatever the label is "art" or not...I like the labels that say: "I like it" and " I don't like it" And this gets the "I like it label"!!..:-)))

Your leaves look very creative to me. You get my vote as an Art Quilter!

It's a process. Nice beginning! I like the way the curvy shapes of the leaves seem extended by the stripes in the background fabric.
